Fort Wetherill State Park sits on 100-foot granite cliffs on Conanicut Island across the water from Fort Adams. It is a former coastal defense battery and training camp with a military history dating to the American Revolution, and its 61.5 acres offer a spectacular view of Newport Harbor and the East Passage. It is a popular viewing site for Tall Ship events and America's Cup races and a major scuba diving destination, with dive clubs using the boat ramp year round. The park also offers picnicking, boating, fishing, hiking and mountain biking, and pets are welcome.
