Panola Mountain State Park near Stockbridge protects a huge granite outcrop just south of Atlanta, and it marks the beginning of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. The exposed rock supports rare plants that thrive in the shallow soil of granite ecosystems. Access to the summit is by guided hike only, which helps protect the fragile plants, and the park's nature center and trails offer other ways to explore. Interpretive programs explain the geology, plants and wildlife of the area. Parking is $5 per vehicle, and camping is $20 to $42 per night where offered. Check the schedule for guided hikes before you go.
