Mauna Kea State Recreation Area sits at about 6,600 feet on the Saddle Road, in the high country between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island. The area has a cool, open feel, with grassland and scattered trees under vast skies. The park offers a quiet base for campers and a starting point for exploring the island's interior. Its high elevation and lack of city lights also make it a great location for stargazing on clear nights. Camping costs $18 per night. Nights can be cold and weather changes fast at this elevation, so bring warm clothing, extra layers and plenty of water.
