Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island is known for a half-mile stretch of soft white sand and clear blue water. It is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world and is one of the island's top spots for swimming and sunbathing. Sunbathers, bodyboarders and swimmers share the wide beach, though waves can be strong at times, so watch for lifeguard notices. Picnic pavilions and A-frame shelters offer shade, and the shelters can be used for overnight stays. The fee is $5 per vehicle, and camping costs $20 per night. Arrive early on weekends and holidays, when the parking lot fills quickly.
