Akaka Falls State Park near Honomu on the Big Island is home to Hawaii's most famous waterfall. Akaka Falls plunges about 442 feet into a deep, fern-draped gorge, creating one of the most memorable sights on the Hamakua Coast. A short, paved loop trail winds through a lush tropical garden of orchids, bamboo, ferns and towering trees. Along the way, the path passes viewpoints of the main falls and the smaller Kahuna Falls, making it an easy walk suitable for most visitors. The fee is $5 per vehicle plus $1 per person for non-residents. Bring a rain jacket, since showers are frequent, and visit in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds.
