Spooner Lake & Backcountry, established in 1969, covers over 12,000 acres of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. It holds the historic Marlette Water System dating to 1873, built for the gold mining era, and the area was logged from the 1870s to the 1900s to support the Comstock mines. The park has 50 miles of hiking, equestrian, and mountain biking trails, with catch-and-release fishing at Marlette Lake and standard limits elsewhere. There are three primitive walk-in campgrounds with a 14-day limit per 30 days, and two backcountry cabins open May 1 through October 15: Spooner Lake Cabin (sleeps four) and Wildcat Cabin (sleeps two). Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park is open sunrise to sunset year-round.
