Cave Rock, established in 1967 as a unit of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, was once an impediment to early lakeshore transportation, and historic travel routes ran over and through the rock formation. It sits on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. The park has a double boat ramp with more than 40 trailer parking spaces, a sandy beach for swimming and snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing from the steep shoreline and rocky shoals, and a launch area for canoes and kayaks. Three picnic areas have tables and grills, and a hiking trailhead is across the highway on Cave Rock Drive. The park is open sunrise to sunset. The boat launch (seasonal) runs 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from May 25 to September 4 and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. from September 5 to May 24.
