Shades State Park near Waveland is a beautiful and rugged park in west-central Indiana, built around sandstone ravines and bluffs above Sugar Creek. Hemlock-shaded gorges and tall cliffs give it a cool, secluded character. Trails lead down into the ravines and along the bluffs, with rewarding views over the creek. Primitive camping fits the park's natural feel, and its dark skies make it a good place to see the Milky Way on clear nights. Nearby Pine Hills Nature Preserve adds even more to explore. Entry is $7 per vehicle with Indiana plates and $15 for out-of-state vehicles, with camping rates varying by site. Bring a flashlight and warm layers if you plan to stay for stargazing.
