Fort Kearny State Recreation Area covers 186 acres and offers camping, fishing, and, in the spring, views of the world's largest concentration of sandhill cranes. It has seven sandpit lakes totaling 21 acres. Visitors can boat (no-wake only), play a nine-hole disc golf course, hike, bike a 1.8-mile trail, swim at the Lake 7 beach, and picnic. Modern restrooms, showers, a dump and fill station, accessible fishing piers, picnic shelters, and a playground are provided. Nearly 100 cottonwood-shaded campsites are spread across the East and West campgrounds, open year-round with Electric Plus, Electric, and Basic options. Half the electrical sites are reservable 180 days ahead. Fort Kearny State Historical Park is three miles west.
