Windmill State Recreation Area takes its name from the old-time windmills in the park, the oldest dating to 1880, and sits at the Gibbon Interchange on I-80 between Kearney and Grand Island. Six lakes hold bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, and carp, and rainbow trout are stocked seasonally. Visitors fish, boat with electric or non-powered boats, swim, hike, bike, play disc golf and sand volleyball, and shoot archery. From March 1 to April 15 a first-come, first-served viewing blind offers sandhill crane viewing. The campground has 69 electric pads (20/30/50-amp) and 23 basic sites without electricity, with modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and laundry. Reservations may be made up to 180 days ahead in peak season.
