Gunlogson State Nature Preserve at Icelandic State Park has bur oak and basswood over a shaded forest floor and alder shrubs in spring-fed wetlands. More than a dozen rare species grow here, from watermeal, one of the world's smallest flowering plants, to bishop's cap, a boreal species found in only a few places in the state. Seldom-seen birds such as the pileated woodpecker live in the forest. Three miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails are open year round. G.B. Gunlogson donated 200 acres of family land in 1963, creating North Dakota's first dedicated state nature preserve.
