Big Basin Redwoods State Park near Boulder Creek is California's oldest state park, established in 1902 to protect its ancient coast redwoods. Towering trees, some among the largest and oldest in the region, have made it a landmark of the state's conservation history. The park suffered major damage in the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fire, but the redwoods themselves are resilient, and many are sprouting new growth. Recovery and rebuilding work continues, and access, trails and facilities may be limited or changing. Day use is $10 per vehicle, and camping runs $35 to $50 per night when available. Check the current park status and any reservation requirements before planning a visit.
