Point Lobos State Natural Reserve near Carmel is often called the crown jewel of the California state park system. Rocky headlands, cypress groves, hidden coves and clear water make it one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline anywhere. Trails lead to viewpoints where visitors can see sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters, and the kelp forests offshore are popular with divers. China Cove and other coves are especially photogenic, and the reserve's wildlife and wildflowers are memorable in every season. Entry is $12 per vehicle. Parking is limited and fills early, so arrive at opening time or plan for a wait.
