Garrapata State Park near Carmel is a wild stretch of Big Sur coast, with cypress-covered headlands, rugged cliffs and long views along the Pacific. Waves crash on rocks below, and sea otters can often be spotted floating in the kelp offshore. Trails climb through canyons and up ridgelines, including the steep Soberanes Canyon trail, which leads through redwoods and up to sweeping ocean views. The park has few facilities, so it feels remote and unspoiled, and wildflowers bloom along the bluffs in spring. Entry is free. Parking is along Highway 1, so be careful with traffic and follow posted signs.
