Oconee Station State Historic Site began as a military outpost and later became a trading post, offering a view of 18th and 19th century life on the South Carolina frontier. Only two original structures remain: the stone blockhouse used by the state militia from about 1792 to 1799, and the William Richards House. Beyond the history, the site has a fishing pond and a 1.5-mile nature trail that joins a trail into Sumter National Forest, ending at Station Cove Falls. Spring brings wildflowers along the way. Donations are welcome, and the nearby Oconee State Park campground makes it easy to see both parks in a day.
