Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site was the home of William Henry Gist, governor of South Carolina from 1858 to 1860, who called for secession after Abraham Lincoln's election. Today the site uses his house to explore the cotton boom and bust, secession, the Civil War, slavery and sharecropping, emancipation and the civil rights era. Guided house tours present the stories of the people who lived and worked here, including Gist's family and enslaved and free Black residents. The grounds are open daily and free to enter.
