H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area covers about 7,000 acres of longleaf pine forest and fields near Cheraw. It hosts national-level field trial and retriever competitions and is the only state park in South Carolina set up for them. The area is also very horse-friendly, with more than 20 miles of trails and sand roads, stables, kennels, corrals and arenas. A meeting hall and waterfowl pond add to the facilities, and the property is also a wildlife management area, so hunters and visitors should wear blaze orange during gun deer seasons. There are 27 campsites with water and electric hookups, plus primitive sites. Check ahead, because the area can close to the public during events.
