Parkin is a National Historic Landmark that preserves a 17-acre Mississippian Period American Indian village that stood here from A.D. 1000 to 1550. Archeologists at the research station have found evidence that Hernando de Soto may have visited the site in 1541. The site was also home to the 1920s Northern Ohio Cooperage and Lumber Company, and the historic African American one-room Northern Ohio School still stands. Nearby are a day-use picnic area, playground and pavilion. The museum is open Wednesday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
