Gaineswood is a National Historic Landmark in Demopolis. Cotton planter Nathan Bryan Whitfield owned and designed the Greek Revival house, built from 1843 to 1861, with elaborate domed-ceiling suites drawn from popular architectural pattern books of the era. The house holds the Whitfield family's antebellum furnishings and decorative arts, and guided tours, programs and exhibits cover nineteenth-century family life. The Alabama Historical Commission owns the site and Friends of Gaineswood operates it. It is a historic house museum with no camping; call ahead for hours.
