Mormon Island State Recreation Area has accessible fishing piers, modern camping, great swim beaches, and abundant picnicking. Mormon Island West holds 42 surface acres of water and the middle island has 19. The lake is no-wake, and visitors also bike, hunt, and use a playground. Each spring hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes stop to rest and court along the nearby Platte River. Shower houses and several restrooms are provided, along with four small picnic shelters and a large group pavilion for about 50 guests. Electric Plus, Electric, and Basic sites are available, with two accessible electrical sites at Cedar Campground. Half can be reserved up to 180 days ahead and the rest are first-come, first-served, with stays limited to 14 consecutive days per 30-day period. Grand Island has hotels and dining nearby.
