Ash Hollow State Historical Park was a major stopover on the Oregon and California trails, and wagon ruts are still visible on Windlass Hill. The site was also used by prehistoric indigenous peoples, including the Dismal River People, ancestors of the Plains Apache. Nine miles of hiking cover four trails. Visitors can take tours of the visitor center, Ash Hollow Cave, and the rock schoolhouse, picnic at 28 tables with five grills, watch birds and wildlife, and hunt in season. There is no overnight camping. The grounds are open 8 a.m. to sunset year-round. The visitor center is open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mountain Time, from May 1 to October 30, and by appointment the rest of the year.
