Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park in Groton preserves the site of a major Revolutionary War battle. In September 1781, British troops led by Benedict Arnold attacked the fort in what became known as the Battle of Groton Heights, and many defenders were killed. Visitors can walk the earthworks and grounds and climb the Groton Monument, a tall stone tower built to honor the fallen, for views over the Thames River and New London. A small museum shares the story of the battle and the people who fought here. Entry is free. Combine your visit with a stop at Fort Trumbull across the river for a fuller picture of the region's military history.
