Fort Yargo State Park near Winder is built around a log fort constructed by settlers in 1792 as protection during conflicts on the frontier. The historic fort still stands near the shore of a 260-acre lake, giving the park a strong sense of local history. The lake is a favorite for paddling, fishing and swimming, and trails around the shore are used by hikers and mountain bikers. Campsites and yurts make it easy to stay overnight, and the park's location near Athens makes it a popular escape for both residents and students. Parking is $5 per vehicle, and camping costs $20 to $42 per night. It is a handy day trip from Atlanta as well.
