Old Iron Town tells the story of Southern Utah's historic mining industry. In the 1850s, pioneer leader Brigham Young sent families to the Cedar City area to set up an iron works. Iron City, now Old Iron Town, was Iron County's second attempt at mining iron and included a schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, foundry and charcoal kiln. It operated only seven years, closing for lack of transportation for the ore and the money panic of 1874. Visitors walk among the ruins of the ironworks and a preserved beehive-shaped charcoal oven, then stroll a nature trail. The park encourages a stop at the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City first, to pick up a self-guided tour brochure.
