Fort Hartsuff was an infantry outpost on the Nebraska prairie from 1874 to 1881 and is one of the most complete examples of the small prairie forts. Its buildings were made with a concrete mixture and have been preserved and restored. The park sits in the North Loup River Valley near the Sandhills. Visitors can tour historical exhibitions, picnic, visit the gift shop, and watch living history demonstrations of blacksmithing, artillery, and period skills. There is no camping or on-site lodging; lodging is in nearby Ord, Elyria, and Burwell, and Calamus Reservoir SRA offers camping. The park is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time, from May 1 through September 30, and on Memorial Day and Labor Day.
