The centerpiece of Burlingame State Park's picnic area is Watchaug Pond, one of the largest freshwater ponds in Rhode Island. The picnic area has fireplaces, tables, a sandy beach with a swimming area and a large shelter pavilion, and a boat launch is close by for boating and fishing with a RI freshwater fishing license. The nearly 8-mile John Vincent Gormley Trail circles the pond through Burlingame and the Kimball Wildlife Refuge; parts run through a management area that allows hunting, so check hunting seasons. There are no fees to access beaches within state parks, and lifeguards are on duty seasonally as staffing allows. The popular Burlingame State Campground is a short drive away.
