Andrew Jackson State Park combines history, art and outdoor recreation near Lancaster, close to the place where the seventh president spent part of his boyhood in the Carolina backcountry. It is one of the state's most visited parks. A museum holds Revolutionary War artifacts and items from Jackson's life, and a replica 18th-century schoolhouse shows what frontier schooling looked like. Anna Hyatt Huntington's sculpture "Boy of the Waxhaws" is a focal point of the grounds, and a birthday celebration for Jackson is held each March. The park also has a campground, picnic facilities, nature trails and a fishing lake, so it works for both a history stop and a longer stay.
