Powhatan is notable for its preservation: all seven historic structures still stand where they were built in the 19th and 20th centuries. The town sits on a hill that overlooked Black River steamboat traffic, and the 1888 courthouse holds exhibits on the commerce and culture of Powhatan and Lawrence County from the 1830s to the early 20th century. Knowledgeable guides lead tours. The courthouse museum and visitor center are open Wednesday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
