Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park near Copeland is often called the "Amazon of North America," a vast strand swamp of about 85,000 acres. Towering royal palms, cypress trees and dense vegetation create a wild, steamy landscape that feels far from the rest of Florida. The preserve is famous for having more native orchid species than anywhere else in North America, including the rare ghost orchid. Visitors can walk boardwalks, drive scenic backroads and look for wildlife, including birds, alligators and, if lucky, the elusive Florida panther. Entry is $3 per vehicle, plus preserve fees for some activities. Bring insect repellent and be prepared for wet, muddy conditions.
