Eldon Hazlet State Park near Carlyle covers about 3,000 acres on the western shore of Carlyle Lake, the largest man-made lake in Illinois. The wide-open water and rolling shoreline make it a favorite for sailors and campers in the southern part of the state. Sailing and boating are popular, and the lake supports excellent fishing. Extensive campgrounds serve families and groups, and trails and picnic areas add variety. Waterfowl and other wildlife are common along the shore. There is no vehicle entry fee, and camping fees vary by site, from $8 to $45 per night. Bring a hat and sun protection, since the lake offers little shade.
