Custer State Park covers about 71,000 acres of granite peaks, pine forest and rolling grassland in the Black Hills, and is the state's flagship park. It is home to abundant wildlife, including a large free-roaming bison herd, and offers camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and horseback riding. Scenic drives such as the Wildlife Loop Road and Needles Highway wind through the park, and clear mountain lakes provide swimming and fishing. Interpretive programs and a visitor center help first-time visitors orient themselves. Nine campgrounds provide camper cabins, tent sites, RV sites with electricity and a horse camp, and lodges and cabins are also available inside the park. GPS can be unreliable here, so visitors should check a map or call the park office.
