The George S. Mickelson Trail is a 109-mile rail-trail through the Black Hills, running from Edgemont to Deadwood with 15 trailheads. It follows the former Burlington Northern line through spruce and ponderosa pine forest and past old mining towns. Bicyclists, hikers and horseback riders use the trail, and it is gentle enough for people of all ages and abilities. Interpretive signs mark the history, including tunnels and trestles, and winter use includes cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Annual passes can be bought online, and daily passes at the trailhead, trail office or an authorized vendor. The coordinates are the trail office near Lead.
