Buryanek Recreation Area on the Missouri River is popular with boaters and anglers and has scenic river views. The Lewis and Clark expedition passed this stretch, where the party was told to watch for "burning bluffs" along the river. The expedition left its mark here with the story of Private George Shannon, the young man who was lost and later found. The park has 44 campsites and three camping cabins, a swimming area and picnic facilities. It is about 20 miles northwest of Platte, and open year-round with some services closed in winter.
