About this park

Matthiessen State Park near Oglesby is a beautiful stretch of canyons, streams, prairie and forest just a few miles south of Starved Rock. It offers much of the same dramatic scenery with fewer crowds. Scenic trails link the Dells area and the Vermilion River area, leading through sandstone canyons, past waterfalls and along shady creeks. Wooden stairways and bridges make some routes easier to explore, and the park is a favorite for photographers and quiet walkers. There is no vehicle entry fee. Wear sturdy shoes, since trails can be slippery after rain.
