Boysen State Park surrounds Boysen Reservoir at the mouth of Wind River Canyon. Camping, boating and fishing are the main draws. The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day, weather permitting. The area has a long history. The Ashley Fur Party came through Wind River Canyon in 1825, and Asmus Boysen built the first dam here in 1908. Part of that original dam can still be seen next to the tunnels at the Lower Wind River Campground. The railroad came through in 1911, the state highway in 1925, and the present dam was completed in 1951. Boysen became a state park in 1956. The park page lists a harmful algal bloom (toxin) advisory for several campgrounds and the Wind River below the dam. Check current notices before swimming or letting pets into the water.
