Wagon Train State Recreation Area is two miles east of Hickman and within 25 miles of Lincoln, with 746 acres of land and a 315-acre lake. Visitors picnic, camp, watch wildlife, bike, and use a playground, and hunting and fishing are allowed. There are over 100 picnic tables, 109 grills, and one shelter. Lake levels are still low following 2022 renovations and drought, which affects swimming, boating, and fishing. Hunting is permitted in designated portions from the first Tuesday after Labor Day through spring turkey season. Camping is first-come, first-served, with 28 electric sites (20-, 30-, and 50-amp) and 80 non-pad sites without electricity. Water, primitive restrooms, and a dump station are provided. Cabins and lodge rooms can be reserved up to a year ahead.
