Ahupua'a 'O Kahana State Park on Oahu's windward side preserves a traditional Hawaiian land division that stretches from the mountains to the sea. This "living ahupua'a" is unusual because it aims to keep Hawaiian cultural practices active, and residents of the valley help steward the land. Visitors can see a lo'i kalo, or taro patch, and learn how taro cultivation supported Hawaiian communities for centuries. Trails wander through the coastal valley, offering shaded forest walks and views toward Kahana Bay. The setting shows how mountain, stream, fishpond and shoreline once worked together as one system. Entry is free. Come with respect for the land and the people who live here, and follow any posted guidance during your visit.
