Pirogue Island State Park is a 269-acre Yellowstone River island at 2,371 feet near Miles City, isolated and shaded by cottonwood trees. It is an excellent spot to watch waterfowl, bald eagles, fox squirrels, and whitetail and mule deer. The park has 2.8 miles of designated hiking trails and seasonal side channels suitable for wading, and the best channel crossing season is mid-August to early April. Visitors can also fish, boat, picnic, hunt, and search for moss agates while reflecting on the Corps of Discovery's journey along the river. Facilities are basic: vault toilets, grills, and fire rings, with no potable water. The park is day-use only, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. year-round, and pets are allowed.
