Ice Age Fossils State Park covers 315 acres and preserves part of the upper Las Vegas Wash, rich in paleontological and historical resources. In the Pleistocene the area was home to now-extinct megafauna including Columbian mammoths, American lions, camels, dire wolves, and ground sloths. The 1962-1963 Big Dig was the largest inter-disciplinary scientific expedition of its kind up to that point. Trails include the 0.3-mile Megafauna Trail with life-sized animal sculptures, the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Wash Trail, and the 1.2-mile Big Dig Trail through the historic excavation trenches. A visitor center has exhibits and a gift shop, and educational programs and group areas are available. The park is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Camping, campfires, drones, and motorized vehicles are not allowed, and pets must be leashed.
