Buckeye Lake State Park is Ohio's oldest state park and remains a beloved day-use destination. The lake first served as a feeder for the state's canal system in the early 1800s, and after the canal era the shoreline drew tourists from around central Ohio. In the mid-twentieth century visitors flocked to an amusement park and dance hall that has since closed. Today the 3,100-acre lake is the main draw, designated for unlimited horsepower but also used by pontoons, sailboats, canoes and rowboats, with seasonal docks available at Fairfield Beach. A four-mile shoreline path connects the North Shore to Lieb's Island and gives walkers and anglers many places to fish or relax.
