Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve is in Moore County, about 35 miles northwest of Fayetteville. It shows the longleaf pine forests that once covered millions of acres in the southeastern United States. Lanky pines, some hundreds of years old, tower over trails crossing wiregrass. Rare species include the red-cockaded woodpecker, the fox squirrel, Sandhills pyxie-moss and the pine snake. Pets are allowed in designated areas.
