Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison is Connecticut's largest shoreline park, with about two miles of sandy beach along Long Island Sound. It has long been one of the state's favorite summer destinations for swimming, sunbathing and picnics. A boardwalk, salt marshes and the Meigs Point nature center add variety, and trails offer birdwatching and quiet walks. Fishing, kayaking and camping are also popular, and the park has plenty of room for families and groups to spread out. Entry is free on weekdays, and weekend parking costs $15 for Connecticut vehicles and $22 for out-of-state vehicles. Arrive early on summer weekends, when the park can fill quickly.
