Devil's Hopyard State Park in East Haddam is a beautiful and slightly mysterious park set along the Eightmile River. Its centerpiece is Chapman Falls, a tiered waterfall that tumbles over stone ledges into a pool known as the Eighty Foot Hole. The falls have carved deep potholes into the rock, and the surrounding hemlock ravines feel cool and shadowy even on hot days. Trails follow the river and climb through the forest, and the park is a popular place to walk, picnic and photograph the falls. Its name comes from local folklore and adds to its character. Entry is free on weekdays, and weekend parking costs $15 for Connecticut vehicles and $22 for out-of-state vehicles. Visit after spring rain for the strongest flow.
