Chugach State Park is one of the largest state parks in the United States, covering nearly 500,000 acres right next to Anchorage. Glaciers, alpine ridges, wild rivers and deep valleys make it an extraordinary wilderness on the city's doorstep. More than 200 miles of trails serve hikers, bikers, skiers and climbers, ranging from short walks to demanding mountain routes. Popular areas include Flattop Mountain, Eagle River and Eklutna Lake, and wildlife such as moose, bears, Dall sheep and eagles are common. In winter, the park is a major destination for skiing and snowshoeing. Parking is $5 per day, camping runs $20 to $25 per site, and boat launch fees range from $10 to $25. Carry bear spray and be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather.
