City of Rocks gets its name from volcanic rock formations: sculptured columns up to 40 feet high separated by lanes that resemble city streets. They formed about 34.9 million years ago after a huge volcanic eruption, then eroded over millions of years. The park covers one square mile of Chihuahuan Desert at 5,259 feet, about halfway between Silver City and Deming.
