Chena River State Recreation Area east of Fairbanks is a huge protected area of about 254,000 acres along the Chena River. Boreal forest, granite outcrops and river valleys make it a major outdoor playground for interior Alaska. The area is best known for the Angel Rocks trail and the granite tors, rocky formations that rise above the forest and offer wide views. Campgrounds, river access and hiking trails serve summer visitors, and in winter the area is a hub for sled-dog mushing and other snow sports. Parking is $5 per day, camping runs $20 to $25 per site, and boat launch fees range from $10 to $25. Bring bug spray in summer and be prepared for changing weather in the hills.
