Fort Clinch State Park at the northern tip of Amelia Island in Fernandina Beach protects one of the best-preserved 19th-century forts in the country. Construction began in 1847 as part of the nation's Third System of coastal defenses, and the brick fort still looks much as it did during the Civil War. Visitors can walk the ramparts, explore the rooms and watch living-history programs in which costumed interpreters re-create daily life at the fort. Beyond the fort, the park offers a long beach, a fishing pier, hiking and biking trails and campsites tucked into coastal forest. Entry is $6 per vehicle, plus $2 for admission to the fort. It is a great destination for history lovers and beachgoers alike.
