Bayard Cutting Arboretum was the Westbrook estate, transferred to the Long Island State Park Commission in the late 1930s by Olivia James in memory of her father, William Bayard Cutting. It was meant to be an oasis of beauty and quiet for visitors. Its grounds on the Connetquot River hold specimen trees, gardens and walking paths. The second purpose of the gift was education about plants and conservation, and the arboretum continues to serve both aims.
