Mount San Jacinto State Park near Idyllwild is an alpine wilderness above Palm Springs, with cool forests and rocky peaks that stand in dramatic contrast to the hot desert below. Long-needle pines and granite ridges dominate the high country at more than 8,500 feet. Many visitors reach the park by riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which lifts passengers from the desert floor to the mountain in minutes. Trails lead to meadows, viewpoints and San Jacinto Peak, and the cool air is a welcome relief on hot days. A tramway ticket is required to enter that way, and park entry is $5. Wilderness permits are required for hiking, so plan ahead.
