Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park in Kodiak occupies a dramatic bluff top of spruce forest above the Gulf of Alaska. The park preserves the ruins of a World War II fort, with concrete bunkers and gun emplacements tucked among the trees. Trails lead to Miller Point and other viewpoints, and the shoreline includes beaches and tide pools. The park is also excellent for birding and, at the right time of year, whale watching. Camping and picnic areas make it easy to spend a long day here. Parking is $5 per day, camping runs $20 to $25 per site, and boat launch fees range from $10 to $25. Bring a jacket, since the coastal wind can be brisk.
